If you’ve just watched the third episode of Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series, appropriately titled “Part III”, you may be wondering: is James Earl Jones the voice of Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi?

Now, before you get upset that I didn’t put a spoiler warning on here to let you know that Darth Vader was in the series, he was on the poster, and teased extensively in the trailer, and also has existed as a character since 1977. So I’m sorry about that. I completely ruined the fact that Darth Vader is in Obi-Wan Kenobi, one of the main selling points of the series. Sorry about that.

But your question wasn’t “are you a jerk who spoils things?” It was, is James Earl Jones the voice of Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi? Great question. Yes. He is.

Another good question, though it is, in fact, the same question. The first clue that James Earl Jones, who has done the voice for Darth Vader since 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope: The Non-Special Edition, and multiple times since, is the voice of Darth Vader in Kenobi is that — and stay with me here — in today’s episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it’s clearly James Earl Jones’s voice. If you listen to Darth Vader, you can hear the voice of James Earl Jones. And yes, indeed, that’s his voice. He has a pretty distinctive voice!

Still, if that wasn’t a big enough clue for you, Lucasfilm cleverly hid another clue in the end credits of the episode. Here, see if you can spot it:

Did you see it? It’s a blink and you miss it moment, as long as you’re blinking for a solid 5 seconds. In the credits for the episode, it states: “James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader.” So there you go! Confirmed.

This is a question that we’ll probably have to wait a few hours to answer (Decider has reached out to Disney for comment), but Lucasfilm has previously used voice samples to recreate classic characters, a la Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in The Book of Boba Fett. Essentially, they run all of an actor’s recorded dialogue through a computer, and then recreate their voice with new dialogue. Given how clean James Earl Jones’s voice sounds in Obi-Wan Kenobi, it’s entirely possible they used this yucky technology again. But regardless, it is James Earl Jones’s voice — just run through a computer. We’ll see whether the nonagenarian headed back to the studio or not for this one.

I realize I’m being a jerk of enormous proportions here (see above re: “jerk who spoils things”), but there is reason to think — if you did not watch the episode, or look at the credits, mind you — that someone else might be doing the voice of Darth Vader. Lucasfilm has been pretty consistent with utilizing the now 91 years old Jones for live action projects, including for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and a blip of his voice in Rise of Skywalker.

But in the show, Hayden Christensen is playing Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, so you could think they were putting a voice modulator on him (they are not). And other projects have used other voice actors… Matt Sloan and Scott Lawrence have basically switched back and forth for both the LEGO animated specials and Star Wars video games. But neither of them are doing the voice in Kenobi… It’s the OG, James Earl Jones. Welcome back, king!
